“I think erm, so much of it isn’t to be decided, you know what I’m saying, it’s not, I don’t think its to be figured out, i think its more to be…I think you make a lot, you start making a lot of things with no thinking of what its supposed to be or who’s it for or what anyone else is gonna think, but just get in the habit of making a lot. Just make a lot. And then at some point in that process, you’ll be like hmmm I really like this and you didn’t know, like through that whole process you don’t know when that’s gonna happen, and its not erm , its not a decision you make, and its not an intellectual idea where I have a vison and I’m gonna make this thing like, it doesn’t happen like that, it rarely happens like that, it happens more just…having fun, making things. no stakes, you know there’s no, nothings on the line”
I believe what Rick Rubin says applies to all creative endeavours, coincidentally when Rick Rubin is producing music he is known for his great ability to listen and create a safe environment with no stakes for the artists he works with where they can break free of their own limitations and simply love and enjoy creating.
No Stakes… means, absolutely no expectations, his aim is to enjoy creating without any concern for the outcome or thoughts of others and create lots of room for failure as a natural feature of growth — I believe this is an extremely healthy way to learn, teach, and become.
